About
the piece...
No
End Save Victory (2002)
for High School Marching Band Grade 3
Commissioned
for the Marching Tigers, Hutchinson High School,
Steve Pasche, Director, by the City Parks Department,
Hutchinson, Minnesota.
This
piece was commissioned for the new Veterans Memorial
Park of McLeod County, Hutchinson, Minn., to celebrate
the contribution of area veterans for the May
2002 Memorial Day ceremonies. Written in collaboration
with the High School Band Program, the City Parks
Department and members of the VFW, American Legion,
and McLeod County Historical Society, "No
End Save Victory" incorporates elements of
the community and its heritage. I was able to
research local history and interview area veterans,
using those conversations and oral histories as
source inspiration for the composition. In addition
to original themes, the work incorporates Lowell
Mason's 1830 hymn-tune HEBRON "Thus
Far the Lord Hath Led Me On" a hymn
sung in 1855 by the Hutchinson Family Singers
the night before they located the town site, and
"Taps," providing a link with veterans
of all generations.
Underwritten
by the Community Partners Program of the
American
Composers Forum with funds provided by the
Mardag
Foundation.
